Customer Rating: Summary: good solid workhorse Comment: This inexpensive vacuum cleaner does the job. It has good suction and draws dirt and accumulation away. I am remodeling so it has been put to the test. I like not having to have bags to change. It empties easily. I am a little disappointed in the way it follows since it does get hung up at corners and on table legs. That may be because of the big wheels. However, I am very please with the cleaning and for a very reasonable price.
Customer Rating: Summary: Power Switch Failure After a Few Months Comment: This is my first canister vac, and I was truly impressed with its performance compared to any upright I had previously used; including Dysons. While it takes a bit of time to get used to dragging around the canister, I'm not sure if I would ever go back to an upright due to the increased power and obvious results. I was amazed as to how much more this would pick-up, and shocked that I had been living with a carpet that could have held so much 'dirt'!
With the plus side being said, my three stars are based on the product itself; the Power Switch on the handle started failing within a few months. I read previous reviews on this product and many stated that it's important to make sure the container is emptied often to keep it from overheating, so I would do so after every one or two rooms. The Switch issue wasn't a part of overheating, but when I would turn it back on after emptying the bin, it wouldn't start. Or, it would start and the brush wouldn't activate. Well, it's gotten to the point where I've learned to live with it, but I feel it was far to soon for it to fail. It's rather frustrating at times.
I have had no issues with it overheating, and the attachments work fine. I really like the extension of the wand for the out-of-reach places, while maintaining power and suction. The length of the cord is perfect, and the auto-retract feature is wonderful. If there wasn't the issue with the power switch, I would have given it a 4 to 5-star rating.
One feature I would like to see is that the unit should not power-on if the bin isn't in place properly. If it's not fully in place it will still power on, and there's not much of a difference in sound for you to realize it's not working properly because the bin isn't properly connected.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Vacuum Comment: This vacuum had surprising suction. I could not believe how much stuff this vacuum picked up. It makes me think that my previous vacuum was not doing anything. Everytime I use this vacuum on my rugs the cannister is full! I like that there are no bags to buy and I can see what it picks up. I was a little concerned when there was not a separate attachment for hard floors but it does the job. The only drawback I can think of is that stairs are a little difficult to clean especially rug.
Customer Rating: Summary: An improvement on the upright Comment: I've been using another Hoover Bagless Windtunnel product for a few years (the upright model), so I'm comparing the performance of this unit with that one.
To start with, I'll say that vacuuming the house is now taking a bit longer, but the house is cleaner as a result. With the upright it wasn't possible to clean hard floors and actually say they were 'clean' -- 'better' would have been the term. With the canister vacuum I don't feel the need to get the broom out and clean the non-carpeted areas.
A big advantage is that this machine gets under furniture much better -- cleaning under the bed (where the dog sleeps) and under tables is simple. The head of the vacuum fits under most pieces of furniture, so I'm not moving things (or cleaning them less often) to nearly the same degree.
The suction seems quite a bit more powerful -- I started by vacuuming a room with the upright, then going over it again with the canister vac. It was a carpeted room but I was impressed with the additional amount of dirt/hair the new machine picked up. Part of this could be a "new vs old" comparison, but the change was noticeable.
The 'bagless' part of the equation has been improved as well. I don't know that I'd choose to open the dirt holder inside, but it's significantly easier and less messy to empty the container than it was on the old model. Both filters (the HEPA filter on the exhaust fan and the primary filter) are washable in cold water as well, which seems an improvement to me. There's a brush included with the vacuum that's specifically designed to clean out the crevices in the filter, which is an improvement over the "bang the filter against the inside of the trashcan in order to shake loose any debris" method on the upright. There's also a light on the canister that alerts you when you need to clean the main filter, so you're not doing it too frequently.
Handling seems a little odd, but I'm used to the upright so this will probably go away. The primary controls are a power slider to control the strength of the suction, and a button to turn on the brushes for carpet cleaning. The cord is retractable but seems a bit shorter than I would like. The hose is plenty long, and all the adjustments are easy to actuate quickly.
It's a good unit. I checked consumer reports online post-purchase and found that it was a 'quick pick,' but that the cheapest editor's choice model cost $300 and wasn't a national brand (but can be found at Sears and K-Mart). Performance is great for the price, and it does the job in my house, even with a dog that *really* knows how to shed.
I'd buy it again. There are other models out there with more features, but this does the job competently.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Canister Vac - Awesome on Wood/Tile Floors Comment: I bought this canister vac as a replacement for one I bought nearly two years ago also on [...]. That one was a General Electric canister vac (bagged) that finally gave out because the electric hose somehow got damaged and the motorized head would no longer worked. However, the GE canister vac was no longer made for, nor sold at Wal-Mart. It came with a 2-year replacement warranty, so after taking it in to my local Wal-Mart and arguing for a few minutes with the clerk, and then her returns department manager, and then the store manager, they finally agreed to credit the full purchase price back onto my visa card.
I got this new vac after doing quite a bit of reviewing reviews on a number of product review websites. It got rave reviews by most folks. I have had it now for about two months, and am REALLY happy with it. The suction is fantastic. I use it in my 2-bedroom (plus kitchen, bath, and living room) apartment. I have all wood floors except for tile in the kitchen and bathroom. There are throw rugs in the kitchen and bathroom and in front of both doors to the outside. I have 5x8 rugs in the living room and bedroom. The vacuum works great on the wood floors. That is probably its strong point. It picks up a LOT more dirt and hair (I have two cats) than the older canister vac did, and I am just amazed at the difference in this respect.
It also does great on the carpets, but sometimes the auto-height-adjustment feature in the motorized head unit takes a couple passes on the rug before it adjusts correctly. This just means it is harder to push the head unit for those couple strokes.
The negatives as I see them are:
* As was common in other reviews, it is annoying that the dust cup/reservoir is so small. I only have 4 rooms to vacuum and it fills up even in this small a place if I vacuum once a week. If I vacuum twice a week it does OK and I am able to finish the whole place before emptying the reservoir. It's not THAT much of a nuisance, but it is there.
* The motorized head (actually the steel upright tube that connects to the head) does not do a very good job of standing by itself...nor conversely of lying down. There is no "positive lock" at this joint. It's just like some kind of friction point that is supposed to keep it "locked" in the up position. The old GE vac had a positive-locking switch on the back of the head unit that you stepped on to release the head/handle so you could get under the couch and stuff. This one I can see wearing out and constantly falling in the not-so-distant future.
I like the power of the beater brush, and as I mentioned before, the suction is outstanding! On full power it tends to pull up the throw rugs and try to eat them, but to some degree all motorized heads tend to do that. I turn down the suction a little and if tend to step on the ends of the throw rugs anyway so they don't get caught up in the beater brush. I like the cord-retractor feature and the carry handle on the body of the canister is also pretty handy.
I bought an extra HEPA output filter and an extra in-dustbin filter so that when I wash the ones that are in the vacuum, I can replace them with the extra set...that way it doesn't matter if it takes a day or two for the washed filters to dry. All-in-all I think it is a great machine!
