Summary: "Good Grip" Huller
Comment: This is as close to perfect as you can get for someone with arthritis. My hand hurts much less using the Good Grips tools from Oxo and this tool is no exception. Yes, there may be a little bit of leaf left, but I always wash my berries after I have handled them so it works well for me. The tool is a convenient size and the berries look great!

Summary: Good but not great.
Comment: I am giving this product 3.5 stars, it does not deserve 4 stars. I am generally a fan of Oxo products but this one falls a little short in my book.

The overall product design/concept is good. It is easy to use, easy to clean and inexpensive. Yet it has some flaws which Oxo will probably fix in later versions of this product.

1. I suggest hulling the strawberries first and then washing them because when you hull them, little bit of the leaves get inside. OR you can wash them, pull off the leaves and then hull them, but I think that is a waste of time.
2. This really only works well with the average size strawberries (approximately 1 inch or so).
With the smaller strawberries, the huller mangles the fruit.
With the larger strawberries, the huller does not remove the entire hull so you still have to remove a little piece of the hull. Also, with the larger strawberries, the hull tends to get stuck in the product so you have to pull it out by hand instead of pushing the button to release it.

Overall, this is the only strawberry huller I have and I will keep using it because it makes hulling faster and I usually am hulling 4 lbs. of strawberries but I think using a paring knife is fine for those who do not hull many strawberries at once.

Summary: EZ Strawberry Huller
Comment: Fabulous!
This little item not only gets rid of the strawberry leaves but also, that bitter center.
You can either use a pareing knife to cut the leaves off and dig out the bitter center OR, this little gem.
Great product!

Summary: Good, but expected better from Oxo
Comment: I'm a foodie and love well-designed kitchen gadgets. If I could give the Oxo huller 3 1/2 stars, I would, but I truly don't think it deserves four stars.

Where does it fall short?

1) I find that I need to pull out the leaves by hand before I use the huller otherwise there are bits of green left behind as the huller minces through the leaves to get to the hull. The product description claims you don't need to do that.

2) You need to get the hang of how to use the huller - I find I have to pierce the fruit at a slight angle so I can scoop the hull out - occasionally the hull just caves into the fruit when you pierce it and you have to turn the fruit upside down and shake the hull out.

When it does work right, I do like the taste of strawberries with the 'not so sweet' hull out, plus it improves presentation on desserts and such when the white hull is absent.

Am I going to replace this tool? I doubt it...unless I am convinced there truly is a huller on the market that has it down pat!

Summary: Works just like it should.
Comment: Oxo products are routinely superior, and the new strawberry huller is no exception. My family often goes through strawberries in bulk, so for us this tool is long overdue.

Many people have a lazy way of preparing strawberries that never tastes right - i.e., they just rip the stem off quickly, or at best they'll make a quick cut at the white part. But my mother's way tastes far better - make a circular incision into each 'berry, making sure the white is mostly gone, leaving only the flavorful part. Up until now, all the hullers in stores have been cheap, flimsy, and awkward - kind of a joke. But OXO finally figured out how to make a one-size-fits-all contraption for the strawberry that works perfectly every time (except when the 'berry is exceptionally small). One quick, unskilled swipe (push in, turn, pull the tool out sideways), and you can move on. For most sizes, you can even get the hull out without the extra step of pulling the leaves off (just rinse them afterward to loosen any that got stuck).

So this makes the job quick and easy, helping you get to the best of the fruit in the best way, with significantly less effort.

Another thing to consider - it also eliminates the danger of slicing into your fingers from holding a knife in an awkward position. So... if you prepare a lot of strawberries, or aren't very skilled at hulling, or have arthritis, or have kids who want to help out, then this is a good investment.
